It’s not hard to think about ways that electricity helps us survive and thrive in our everyday lives. Society depends on our ability to generate and control electricity to do an infinite number of things vital to your daily lives as well as for your entertainment. Electricity enhances the quality of our lives so much we can’t imagine living without it!

Short term power outages are usually just an inconvenience! We may have to find new ways to entertain ourselves or keep ourselves occupied and safe.

However, when there are extended power outages, such as after a natural disaster, we quickly become aware just how important electricity is to our society! We may become uncomfortable without heaters or air conditioners, lights at night or power for our smartphones, TVs and computers!

Hurricane Maria, a massive Category 5 storm, devastated much of the Caribbean in September of 2017.  Four months later, 450,000 people in Puerto Rico still did not have electric power.  Imagine living without TV, video games, refrigerators, and microwaves for months on end!

Power outages can quickly become very serious situations that can lead to people getting hurt or even loss of life if not dealt with quickly. Freezing conditions, lack of drinking water, and spoiled food quickly become issues with which we must contend. For example, in February of 2021, Winter Storm Uri brought down much of the power grid in Texas.

Far beyond just making life more enjoyable, we cannot support the current population of the Earth without electricity.
