What is an Electrician?

An electrician is a skilled trades person who designs, installs, maintains and repairs electrical systems and products used in homes, businesses and factories.  The wiring in your house was probably installed by an electrician when it was being built or remodeled.

How do you become an Electrician and what kind of education or certificates are needed?

Being an electrician is one of the best jobs you can have with only a high school diploma or its equivalent.  Most electricians get their education on the job, through an apprenticeship program that lasts four or five years.  Apprentices complete about 144 hours a year of technical training, in addition to 2,000 hours of on-the-job experience a year.  Electrician trainees can also attend technical schools to accelerate their apprenticeship.

What is the career progression for an Electrician?

Once your apprenticeship is complete, depending on the local requirements, you take one or more tests to earn your journeyman status.  Most states require electricians to be licensed, which involves another test.  After gaining experience as a journeyman electrician, you can become a supervisor or manager with additional training and education.

What is it like working as an Electrician?

Being an electrician is a very active, physical occupation.  You must be in good physical condition to climb ladders, work in confined spaces and lift heavy objects.  Good eyesight and hand-eye coordination is necessary, along with an aptitude for tools.  A knack for solving problems and paying very close attention to detail are also very important.
